During our 2004 stay in Florida, We discovered a great bike trail in Polk City where an old railroad track was transformed into a 20 mile hardsurfaced path......Every example of Florida wildlife was represented at each and every bike adventure, including the aligator. At our campground we saw a 3 footer in a small lake but it was removed by the staff since these gators were known to grab small pets who may have ventured too close to the water edge.
I had this vision of Florida gators on one of those bike rides when my wife suddenly screamed and I saw her start pedaling faster than I thought her capable. In the large wet water stream to the right of the bike path and directly in front of the bushes where my wife let out that scream, laid this aligator with its eyes staring at me. With no regard to reason or consequence, I jumped off my bike with camera in hand and ventured forward to record this event for the grandchildren. After a loud "what are you doing" from my wife, I suddenly noticed that I had walked into the wet area and had a sudden sinking feeling that made me aware of what I was facing. That aligator gave me a look of contempt, raised its tail in defiance and lowered its tail with such a force that I missed it submerge under the branches......I was out of there before I could wipe the muddy splash from my face. If you look at the last photo to the left, look hard at the size of that gator. No need to explain the fuzzy photo!
